Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad Announces
55th Annual Golf Classic Sponsored by

Jack Becker of Barratt American Named as Honorary Chairman
(CARLSBAD, Calif. – January 30, 2007) – Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad today announced that it will hold its annual fundraising golf tournament on March 26 at the El Camino Country Club in Oceanside. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, whose programs and services serve to promote and enhance the development of girls and boys by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.
TaylorMade-adidas Golf Company joins the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad as presenting sponsor for the eighth year in a row. Others sponsors include Ryan Companies US, Inc.; Interior Specialists, Inc.; John Stevenson Plumbing, Aegis Electronic Group, Inc.; Geotek, Inc.; Waste Management; Kinsell, Newcomb & DeDios; and Morrow Development.
El Camino Country Club will host the day’s events, which include a $1,000 grand prize drawing (must be present to win), an auction, and on-course specialty spirits from local restaurants, microbreweries and wineries. The Golf Classic will be played in a scramble format with contests including Hole-in-One, Longest Drive and Inside the Circle. Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. - the Putting Contest follows shortly after at 10:30 a.m. and the tournament begins at 11:45 A.M. with a Shotgun Start. An awards dinner, sponsored by Creative Touch Interiors, will honor the tournament and contest winners immediately following the tournament (around 5:15 p.m.)
Jack Becker, former president of the San Diego division at Barratt American home builders, has been named the honorary chairman of the event. Becker retired in August of 2006 after more than 25 years with Barratt American.
As a president and main board member of the new locally owned Barratt American, Becker headed the flagship segment of its corporate activity, involved in suburban community d4evelopment and home building in San Diego, Orange and south Riverside counties. Established in 1980 as U.S. subsidiary of the international building leader, Barratt American has provided homes for more than 18,000 families and individuals throughout Southern California.
Becker was an essential factor in Barratt American's success for over two decades. Since he rose to an executive operational role in the mid-1980s, every Barratt home built in Southern California has embodied his passion for excellence.
Long active in civic, charitable and industry activities, Becker has served regularly as a fund-raiser for The American Heart Association and United Cerebral Palsy. He was a member of the Presidents Council of the San Diego Building Industry Association and has been active in membership growth and retention.
Becker joins several local business leaders in assisting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad’s tournament, which is anticipated to be a sold out event. Scott Grugel of Interior Specialists, Inc. is the event’s Steering Committee Chairman.
