BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CARLSBAD’S GLOBETROTTER PROGRAM SENDS SUPPLIES TO AFRICA
(November 20, 2005 -- Carlsbad, CA) Members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad’s Globetrotter Program sent clothing, soccer balls, dolls, and games to a small school in Brenu Akyinim Village, Ghana, in West Africa. The items were sent to the school with the help of the Obey Foundation, whose mission is to enrich and improve cultural awareness and overall quality of life for citizens throughout the Diaspora.
The Club’s Globetrotter Program introduces elementary children to various cultures of the world. Members study a different country each month through daily activities, quizzes, sports, and special guests. The month culminates with a celebration party honoring the country. “The entire club participates, and the members are always curious to taste the ethnic foods and experience the traditions of each country,” said Andre Walker, Village Branch Director. “We believe that it is essential that our youth learn about other cultures at a young age in order to remove much of the bias and misunderstanding that exists in our world.”
This year’s Globetrotter Program members will learn about Austria, Egypt, Chile, Scotland, China, Ireland, Nigeria, and Spain.
