These programs help youth create aspirations for the future, providing opportunities for career exploration and educational enhancement.
Project Learn
Project Learn reinforces and enhances the skills and knowledge young people learn at school through "high-yield" learning activities at the Club and in the home. Based on Dr. Reginald Clark's research that shows fun, but academically beneficial activities increase academic performance, these activities include leisure reading, writing activities, homework help and games like Scrabble® which develop young people's cognitive skills. Project Learn emphasizes collaborations between Club staff, parents and school personnel. Formally evaluated by Columbia University, Project Learn has been proven to boost the academic performance of Club members. Project Learn is sponsored by Union Bank of California.
Power Hour
A comprehensive homework help and tutoring program, POWER HOUR is designed to raise the academic proficiency of Club members ages 6-18. POWER HOUR is sponsored by The JCPenney Afterschool Fund and the United Way of San Diego County.
Goals For Graduation
Goals for Graduation, sponsored by The JCPenney Afterschool Fund, introduces Club members ages 6-12 to the concept of academic goal setting. In one-on-one sessions with Club professionals, members set achievable "Know-I-Can" goals, more challenging "Think-I-Can" goals and yearly "Believe-I-Can" goals, then create action plans. The program provides for recognition of members' achievements at every step of the journey.
Globetrotters
What's it like to live in another country? What are its national sports? What's life like and what are the country's unique art and cultural activities? Every month, members of the Globetrotters Club embark on a fascinating journey of research, learning and discovery. Members are offered the opportunity to participate in arts, sports and cultural traditions pertaining to the "Country of the Month." And, to bring Globetrotting to a personal level, each year the most outstanding members of the Globetrotters, ages 10 to 14, are handpicked to travel for a journey of a lifetime. The Globetrotting trip affords children a remarkable experience to immerse themselves in the culture of another country, enhancing their education, perspective and awareness of the world around them.
Dragon Fly Quest
What's the science behind skateboarding? Or hip-hop dancing? Members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad can discover the underlying science in everyday experiences thanks to DragonFly TV, a science show for kids 9 to 12, produced by Twin Cities Public Television. DragonFly videos, featuring real kids doing real science and explaining their own investigations and doing their own experiments, are shown to club members. Local club members can also share their own ideas with a national audience by clicking on "Be on DFTV," a safe and fun place for Boys & Girls Club members to do online science experiments.
