Mentoring
Mentoring works. A statewide survey* reveals that mentoring contributes to student success: 98.4% of student participants remained in school, 85.25% didn't use drugs, 97.95% didn't become teen moms and 98.2% didn't participate in gangs. Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad offers at-risk students between the ages of 12 and 18 who are attending the Carlsbad Unified School District a special opportunity to experience trust, counsel and support from specially trained and screened adult mentors. The Club's Multi-Cultural Mentoring Program fosters supportive relationships that focus on the needs of young people while encouraging them to develop healthy lifestyles and nurture positive self-images for the future. The program brings together mentors, students and parents and consists of one-on-one mentoring, student and parent orientations, field trips, job shadowing, group activities and an annual dinner. Prospective mentors must commit to the program for one full year. They will receive training and they are required to complete monthly activity reports and attend the annual dinner.
