SCOTT & DEB CHELBERG
Branches of Legacy: A Story of Family, Community & Giving
Scott and Deb Chelberg’s journey to becoming pillars of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad is a story of dedication, family, and a shared passion for community impact. Their individual paths, shaped by strong family values, hard work, and a commitment to giving back, have brought them to this incredible honor as the 2025 Gala’s Honorary Chairs.
Scott’s Story: A Foundation of Hard Work and Giving
Scott grew up in the small town of Brainard, Nebraska, population 310, where he learned the value of responsibility early on. Working at his parents' truck stop restaurant from the sixth grade through college, he developed a strong work ethic that would define his future success. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance from the University of Nebraska, Scott made his way to San Diego, ready to build his career.
His journey in financial services began in 1985 with IDS/American Express Financial Advisors. By 1988, he had founded SC Financial Services, later evolving into Retirement Solutions, Inc., where he continues to guide clients in securing their futures. But beyond his professional success, Scott has always believed in using his talents to support meaningful causes—a principle instilled in him by his father.
Deb’s Story: A Heart for People and Community
Deb, a native San Diegan, was born at Balboa Hospital while her father was serving as an officer on the USS Ticonderoga. Raised in Carlsbad, she attended local schools before earning a degree in Sociology from Cal State San Marcos. Her professional journey led her into Human Resources, where she has built a successful career, ultimately becoming the Chief People Officer for the West Region of Marsh McLennan Agency.
Deb’s natural empathy and passion for people have made philanthropy a core part of her life. Her involvement with the Boys & Girls Club began years ago when she was recruited onto the Gala Committee. While her busy career has limited her availability in recent years, her love for the Club’s mission has never wavered, and she continues to support in any way she can.
A Love Story Rooted in Family and Branched into Community
Scott and Deb’s story together began in 2002 when they met at Epazote’s in Del Mar. Four years later, they got married at The Lodge at Torrey Pines and honeymooned in Maui, a place that still holds special meaning for them. Over the past two decades, they have blended their families, raising five children—Deb’s three boys, Robert (Bobby), Connor, and Jordan, and Scott’s two girls, Cydney and Kendel—who remain incredibly close. They now adore their growing family of granddaughters, Violet (10), Mila (almost 2), and another little one arriving this summer.
Their love for bringing people together extends beyond family gatherings—they are passionate about entertaining, cooking, and creating spaces where laughter and connection thrive. Whether it’s boating, playing board games, or enjoying their favorite cuisines (steakhouse and sushi for Scott; Mexican and sushi for Deb), they cherish the time spent with loved ones.
The Expanding Branches: A Commitment to the Boys & Girls Club
Scott’s relationship with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad began during a pivotal moment in his life. As a single father raising two daughters with no family nearby, the Club became a lifeline, providing a safe space where his daughters could complete their homework and build friendships while he focused on work. This experience inspired him to get involved on a deeper level.
In 2003, Scott joined the Club’s Board of Directors, serving on the Executive Committee and later as Board President during the construction of the Bressi Ranch Clubhouse. He retired from the Board in 2024 but continues his service as the Secretary of the BGCC Foundation, focusing on securing long-term funding through planned giving to ensure future generations benefit from the Club’s programs.
Deb’s involvement has spanned over two decades, from serving on the Gala Committee to supporting the Club’s various initiatives. Her passion for ensuring that all children have access to opportunities to thrive aligns perfectly with the Club’s mission.
Among their many contributions, Scott and Deb cherish the special moments they’ve experienced with the Club—whether it’s seeing the impact of the Super Star Dinner, bringing friends to the Gala, or introducing new supporters to the Taste of Bressi. In 2011, Scott’s dedication was recognized with the prestigious Bob Grimes Humanitarian Award, an honor that remains close to his heart.
Branches of Legacy: Growing the Future
Scott and Deb’s history with the Boys & Girls Club embodies the very theme of this year’s Gala—"Branches of Legacy." Their roots in family, hard work, and philanthropy have formed the strong trunk of their lives, supporting and nurturing not only their own children but also countless youth in the community. Their efforts have extended beyond their immediate circle, reaching into the Club, the Carlsbad community, and beyond—much like the ever-growing branches of a mighty tree.
As they accept this honor, their focus remains on growing the BGCC Foundation, educating donors on the importance of planned giving, and ensuring that the Club continues to thrive for future generations. Their story serves as a reminder that when we plant seeds of kindness and cultivate a culture of giving, the branches of our impact extend far beyond what we can see.
For Scott and Deb, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad is more than just an organization—it is a living, growing legacy. It is a place where roots are planted, branches extend, and future generations find strength and support.
Because at the heart of it all, Great Futures Start at BGCC.
